The David Brown tractor era started during the second world war after primarily being involved in machine cut gears. Initially tractor production started in 1936 after a partnership with Ferguson where the Ferguson Brown tractor was created.
The Yorkshire manufacturer became one of the biggest tractor manufacturers of the post war period in the UK. The Feguson partnership did not last long through circumstances beyond Browns control. As a result the first true David Brown tractor was built and launched in 1939, the VAK1.
My Grandad worked as a farm hand for many years and over this career drove many tractors including the David Brown of which is one of his favourites. Now long retired he is still has a keen interest in tractors and farming in general. A very keen allotment holder he is a life long Lincolnshire lad.
One story I remember well was a story he told me about when the tractor he was driving caught on fire. Suffice to say the tractor ended up in the ditch which ironically put out the engine fire. He did escape unscathed after jumping from the cab, apparently the smoke made it impossible to see where he was going. I wasn't just the tractor that ended up dented.
